07.21.07 Girls Soccer

Vermont defeated New Hampshire, 4-1, to win the Lions Twin State Soccer Cup. Annie Rowell (St. Johnsbury) scored three goals and netted herself the Vermont Most Valuable Player, while 12th player winner Alison Hemphill of Peoples tallied the other score. Gabby Bonfigli (Essex) finished with a pair of assists and VT goalkeepers, Lindsay Volk (CVU) and Jody Martin (Rochester), combined for six saves.

06.28.07 Golf

Vermont posted a 16.5-13.5 victory over New Hampshire in the Jeff Julian Cup all-star golf tournament at Woodstock Country Club. Three Vermonters earned the maximum three points in the tournament. Carter Hasbrook of Woodstock, John Lussier of Lake Region and Brian Hopkins of Lyndon all swept their matches, 3-0. Mike Fogg of Essex earned 2-1/2 and Jack Alberti of Rutland and Kim Wong of U-32 put up two each.

06.24.07 Softball

The North completed a three-game sweep of the South with an 8-0 win on the final day of the North-South Softball Classic at Lyndon Institute. Sonja Cousino of Mt. Abraham, Tiani Gariboldi of Spaulding and Lindsay Brannon of BFA-St. Albans each tripled to lead the North's offense. Amanda Downey of Essex, Tosha Whittemore of Middlebury and Erin Wry of Mount Mansfield each went three innings.

06.21.07 Honors

Lydia Bickford of Peoples Academy has been named the 2007 Vermont high school girls track and field athlete of the year by Gatorade. Bickford captured the 100- and 200-meter dashes, the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump at the D-III state meet. She holds the state D-III record in the 100 and 200.

Ethan Furlon of Mount Anthony was named All-American at the National High School Coaches Association Open Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Furlon finished sixth in the 285-pound class with a 3-3 record.

06.11.07 Softball

Lyndon Institute won 3-2 over Randolph to claim the Division II state title. With two out in the bottom of the sixth, LI broke a 2-2 tie, when Jessica Shufelt scored from first base on a single by Christine Bailey for the game's winning run. Courtney Simpson grabbed the win on the mound with a four-strikeout six-hitter.

06.11.07 Baseball

Vergennes defeated Mt. Abraham, 6-1, to win the Division II state championship. The Commodores broke a 1-all tie in the sixth with four runs. Vergennes pitcher Corey Haight threw a two-hitter with seven strikeouts and added a two-run double at the plate. Zane Leno , Cameron Curler, Ryan Devine and Haight scored in the decisive inning.
