07.14.06 VT Hall of Fame Inductees

Andre Whyte Mt. Anthony (VT) Football and Basketball Andre, Varsity’s Vermont Male Athlete of the Year, is the state’s best running back and defensive back, and one of the state’s most dominant basketball players. Andre owns 16 Mt. Anthony football records, including: career rushing yards (3,438), single season rushing (1,317), and career touchdowns (34). He was a three-time Division 1 All-Star, two-time All-State, and was named to Vermont’s Shrine football team. In basketball, Andre was an All-American Nominee, two-time Marble Valley League First Team, and named to the Vermont Team for the Twin-State Rotary Classic. Andre is headed to Bryant College on a football scholarship.

Alicia Hawks S Burlington (VT) Field hockey and Lacrosse Alicia was an All-American in field hockey and lacrosse and will be taking her dominant speed, toughness, and skill to the University of Vermont next year. In her career, Alicia played in five state finals and won one D-1 state championship (field hockey).

Carson Laderoute Rutland (VT) Soccer and Basketball Following an ACL injury that marred most of her junior year, Carson returned to form in her senior year and used her overwhelming athleticism to dominate Vermont soccer and basketball in 2005-06. Her spring sport was always a bit of a wild card—after participating in golf and track she picked up a stick her senior year and contributed to the Rutland girls’ lacrosse team. Carson will be playing soccer for the University of Vermont next year.

Chelsea Furlani Colchester (VT) Soccer, Hockey, and Softball Chelsea was the best hockey player, arguably the best catcher in softball, and she used her speed and aggressiveness to be a dominant soccer player in the toughest division in Vermont. At one point or another in her high school career she was a three-sport All-State player, and she won back-to-back championships in ice hockey.

Corey Greene Mt. Anthony (VT) Wrestling Corey, wrestling at 130 pounds, was a three-time Vermont state champion, a two-time New England champion, and was the 2005 National High School Coaches Association Open Champion. He was named All-American by Wrestling USA, and ranked 14th out of the top 30 wrestlers at 130 pounds. Corey compiled a 192-13 record and will be wrestling next year for the University of Buffalo.

Jennie Bender Peoples Academy (VT) Cross-Country Running and Skiing and Outdoor Track and Field Jennie, Varsity’s Vermont Female Athlete of the Year, was one of the state’s best cross-country runners; the state’s and one of the nation’s best cross-country skiers; and one of the state’s best 800, 1,500, and 4X400 relay runners. In Jennie’s four-year career she won 11 out of a possible 12 state championships.

06.20.06 Track & Field

Bryant Williams of Essex and Jennie Bender of Peoples Academy have been selected as the top boys and girls high school track and field performers in Vermont by Gatorade. The award is based on performances in track and in the classroom, along with overall character. Williams qualified for the state meet in five individual events and won the 110 and 300 hurdles. Bender is a four-time champion in the 800 and 1,500 meters in Division III and a two-time state champ in the 400 meters and on the 4 by 400 relay team.

06.19.06 Golf

Catherine Shomo became the second golfer from Rutland High School to win the New England Interscholastic Golf Tournament. Shomo, who is the three-time defending Vermont girls Division I champion, shot a 3-over-par 75 to edge five golfers by a stroke.

06.17.06 Track & Field

Antonia Armstrong-Laird, a 14-year-old freshman from St. Johnsbury Academy captured the title at the 31st K of C Vermont State Decathlon-Heptathlon Championships. Armstrong-Laird finished with 3,503 points and Fair Haven’s Ashley Brown took second with 3,413. Armstrong-Laird won the shot put, was third in the javelin and 200, and took fourth in the 800. The boys event was won by Tyrone Conley of Burlington with Mount Anthony's Joe Johnson finishing second and Fair Haven's Manuel Richards third. Conley won three events, the long jump, high jump and discus.

06.13.06 Softball

Green Mountain defeated Richford, 5-0, to win the D-III championship. Green Mountain erupted for five runs in the third inning. Sam Turco, Mae Baldwin, Rachel Durgin, Meghan Farrell and Wilcox scrored to take advantage of four hits and two errors. Sarah Wilcox fired a one-hitter and struck out fiver and walked one, both in the first inning, before retiring 19 of the last 20 batters she faced.

BFA-St. Albans beat Essex, 1-0, to capture the D-I championship. Katelyn Billings yielded four hits, struck out three and walked two for the win. Jenna Putnam scored the game’s only run in the sixth inning on a bunt from Heather French. BFA earned its second consecutive championship and extended its winning streak to 40 games.
