03.28.06 Boys Basketball

Jon Chaloux of Spaulding was named the boys Vermont Gatorade high school Player of the Year. Chaloux’s game average of 17 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 2 assists bolstered a talented Spaulding team into the Division I state finals.

03.28.06 Girls Basketball

Alissa Sheftic of Essex was named the girls Vermont Gatorade high school Player of the Year. Sheftic led Essex to the Division I state title averaging 17 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 3 steals per game. With her total 917 points, 712 rebounds, 168 blocked shots, and 50.98 field goal percentage, she is ranked among the all-time leaders at Essex. She has accepted a scholarship to play basketball next year at the University of Vermont.

Leslie Mencia of Montpelier earned the Girls Basketball Player of the Year Award. Over her four-year career, she scored 982 points. Her performance led the Solons to a seven-game winning streak at the beginning of the year and an eight-game streak towards the end of the year. Mencia plans to continue to play basketball in college next year.

03.28.06 Boys Hockey

Brattleboro’s co-captain Mak Kennedy earned the Brattleboro Reformer’s Boys Hockey Player of the Year award. Kennedy led the team with 27 goals and 18 assists. His performance pushed Brattleboro into the playoffs.

03.28.06 Girls Hockey

Brattleboro’s co-captain Alicia Porter earned the Brattleboro Reformer’s Girls Hockey Player of the Year award. Porter started the season with a broken wrist and chronic knee problems but that did not stop her remarkable defensive production.
